Leader Prepares Crew for the VUCA World

In today’s fast-paced work environment, it is essential to be prepared for the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world that we live in. That’s where the Plan of the Day meeting comes in. After listening to thousands of conversations, we learned that the daily planning meeting is essential for establishing a foundation for a stronger workplace culture. The crew should be thoroughly prepared for the day’s work. The more they have spoken and engaged in the meeting, the more confident you can feel in having their day go according to the plan. This is why the meeting is so important, as it prepares the crew and allows them to react appropriately.

Volatility refers to the speed of change. After the meeting, they are exposed to an environment where other crews may not have had a thorough and detailed plan. This is why the daily planning meeting is essential, as it prepares everyone for the potential exposure to high risk situations that can result in a serious injury or fatality.

Uncertainty refers to the extent to which we can confidently predict the future. It’s important to recognize the uncertainty of the environment and the potential effects of others on the crew’s work.

Complex environments require consideration of multiple factors including the variety and the relationships between them. It can be difficult to analyze and come to rational conclusions in complex environments. The more information shared in the meeting enables you to make better decisions in these environments.

Lastly, ambiguity refers to the lack of clarity about how to interpret something, and it can be difficult to interpret in a fuzzy and vague situation. Good discussion and engagement can help clarify instructions.

These four factors are related and can create significant challenges in the workplace. However, engaging in a daily planning meeting can help to prepare the crew for the VUCA world, lessen exposure to hazards, and recognize potential risks. As a leader, it’s essential to prepare your crew for the task and the hazards of the whole project environment.
