Leader Asks Crew for the Biggest Risks of the Day’s Work

A safe and productive day starts with everyone being engaged in a discussion about the job. To identify the biggest risk associated with the plan, the leader asks the crew to identify the riskiest things that could prevent them from accomplishing their goals for the day. This allows the opportunity for dialogue between the leader and crew to identify barriers to accomplishing the plan for the day.

The discussion not only pertains to the specific task but also brings in ancillary tasks and conditions associated with the work. These may include current or changing weather conditions, operating conditions in an existing facility, other trades working in the area, handling material for the job, and so on. It’s all the things that have the potential to affect the accomplishment of the job assignment.

The discussion of the riskiest things is intended to identify and then prevent the alignment of conditions that could cause an incident. Everyone should have the opportunity to contribute their thoughts to set the tone for further engaged conversations. By identifying the biggest risk, you can take action based on real data as identified by the crew and create a barrier to the issue.
